In linking the project locations in the Industrial Garden Realm, the railway constitutes a
culturally important factor for regional identity. The preservation and future-oriented
development of the regional railway aims to create - in the medium term - a regional network
combining elements ranging from a »museum railway« to »high-tech railway«.
The project for an Eco-EXPO in the triangle formed by the cities of Dessau-Bitterfeld-Wittenberg,
as developed by the Bauhaus in 1991-92, provides for the preservation of the existing railway
infrastructure and its use as an environmentally-friendly means of transport. The aim was to
have the regional railway connect the visionary projects and, at the same time, lend distinct
form to the network idea of the EXPO.
During EXPO 2000, the Regional Railway Network will be put to the test.
